‘If you’re the person that people always go to for music recommendations get in touch.’
Ever since February 2017, Listen to Discover has been a solo venture. Well, solo in the respect that the four areas – interviews, reviews, gig coverage and playlisting – have all been covered by myself. Not solo though in the respect that it wouldn’t be anything without the plethora of artists and PR companies that have been involved.
Each month I receive tracks from somewhere in the region of 100 different artists, each aiming to get coverage of some kind. For me, this is incredible and something that I would never have believed could happen two years ago. Equally, as these requests have increased, so have each of those previously mentioned areas. However, while things may have developed, the key focus has always remained the same.
As you will know, the focus has always centred on two key factors: Detail which runs through every review and interview, and connection which forms the very basis of those elements. Essentially if I find no connection, the artist or track won’t be featured. To this point it has worked, and still works brilliantly. However, with the requests growing and me staying true to my own ethos, the balance between Listen to Discover and my main job is becoming trickier. This where you, yes you reading this come in.
Maybe you’re someone that hears the weird and thinks ‘This is going to be the next big thing.’ Maybe you have a go to artist that very few people know about. Or maybe you’re the person that people always go to for recommendations. If that’s you, then I want to hear from you.
At this point it doesn’t really matter if you haven’t got any writing, reviewing or social media experience. That will come in time and as the role evolves. However, what does matter, especially with the role being unpaid, is that you have a passion for music, are prepared to listen to any genre and have a want to tell the world about those discoveries you love.
So, to be in with a chance of becoming part of Listen to Discover, consider the following three questions and email your answers to email@example.com by Friday 14th June 2019.
- What track/artist have you recently discovered?
- What do you love about it/them?
- Why should other people listen to it/them?
I look forward reading your answers and deciding who will be joining me as part of Listen to Discover.
