Behind the Music: Interview with Nii

‘Writing songs and performing doesn’t work for me unless I am completely honest.’

Where are you from? I am originally from North West London, but now based in Leeds.

What instruments do you play? I’ve been playing guitar since I was 12, I’m 22 now and I started singing properly around 4 years ago.

What has music enabled you to do? Music gives me an avenue of expression that I would otherwise find hard to put into words. It’s my most effective way of communicating with people because writing songs and performing doesn’t work for me unless I am completely honest.

Who else is involved in you music? I produced ‘Midnight in Tokyo’ with Will Killen and Nick Cragg. Nick is also my bassist when I play live and I also have Tom Pattinson on drums. I write the songs, but I love developing a sound with the band or with Will. I’m always discovering a better way to embody the music because of those guys.

Who are your inspirations? I love artists like Frank Ocean and James Blake as their songwriting resonates with me greatly. John Mayer is also huge part of me being audacious enough to go from being known as a guitarist, to stepping out as a singer/songwriter!

Do you have any releases and/or performances coming up soon? I will be playing at the Library in Leeds supporting PATAWAWA on the 22nd of February. Hannah Slavin will be supporting as well. Her stuff is awesome and we went to the same university so I’m looking forward to hearing her live.
