Behind the Music: Sixteen Records Interview Series: Interview with Hannah Slavin

‘For me, music is a way of bringing people together.’

Describe your music style in no more than 5 words: Honest Soulful-Electronic Vibes.

Where are you from? Originally from Glasgow, but currently living in Leeds.

Where is your go-to place for writing new tracks? Anywhere with a piano.

Do you prefer performing live or recording in a studio? 100% performing live, there is nothing else in the world that compares to it.

Why did you become involved in music?  I’ve always been a singer ever since I was a kid, so I think involving myself in music came very naturally to me, as it’s what I’ve always wanted to do and loved doing.

When did you first become involved in music?
I think I’ve always been involved in music in one way or another. When I was young, I would always be in musicals or talent shows and basically sing at any chance that I got. It kind of just became a part of who I am. However, it wasn’t until I moved to Leeds that I started releasing my own music.

What has music enabled you to do?
Music allows me to express how I really feel without question and it’s made me a more confident person. It’s enabled me to work with my best friends, meet people who inspire me and do what I love every single day.

What was the first concert/gig that you were involved in?
My first major concert was performing with Marc Almond (Tainted Love) on his UK Tour a couple of years ago. We performed at Leeds Town Hall and the Royal Festival Hall in London – it was crazy! He has some very hardcore fans!

What is the most recent performance you did?
One of my most recent performances was performing live as part of Leeds Contemporary Singers on BBC One’s TV show ‘Pitch Battle’. It is probably the most exciting moment of my music career so far. We performed ‘Your Game’ alongside Will Young and also sang with Kelis after she announced that we won the show!

What is the point of music?
For me, music is a way of bringing people together. It can make people feel like they are less alone and make you feel a part of something.
