Background to Anoushka:
Bearing in mind that it was Anoushka who I first heard on the Radio 2 coverage of BBC Introducing, it seems strange that there isn’t more out there about her already. However, it would appear that she is very much establishing herself within the London jazz scene and having released an EP back in 2011, is now embarking on a new album. Anoushka’s earlier tracks, in particular ‘Miracle’ demonstrate a real talent for writing and performing great, old fashioned style jazz music. This said, it is clear from her most recent offering that her musicality has come a long way from what was already a developed sound. Read on to find out more.
Given the subtle opening to Anoushka’s track Dark Soul, it would be easy to immediately think the whole song will be a slow, minimalistic vocal tribute to the pianist Einaudi, but don’t be fooled by this, this is just one of many clever musical tricks that Anoushka uses in the track. This simple piano motif actually does quite a lot as not only does it set up the style for the rest of the quartet to work with, it delays the entrance of Anoushka’s powerful yet soothing voice and keeps you subconsciously hanging onto her every word.
As the track progresses, the use of clever musical trickery continues with it very gradually building without expectation to a climax. This is achieved through the clever use of gentle drum fills, a double bass and a jazz organ which towards the end, breaks into a solo which, if you weren’t there already, fully transports you into a smokey jazz club in the back streets.
As the track closes, we are treated again to Anoushka’s vocal which guides us to an ending that wants to be resolved but is left open ended. A final musical trick, which quite literally leaves you wanting more.
